The Millionaire Fastlane
MJ DeMarco's core attack: "get a job, save, invest in index funds, retire rich at 65" is the
Slowlane — it trades your one non-renewable asset (time) for money and bets your whole life
on compounding decades from now. The Fastlane builds a business that detaches income from
your hours and can scale.
The frameworks
- Three financial roads: Sidewalk (spend everything, no plan), Slowlane (trade time for
money, hope to retire old), Fastlane (build assets/systems that produce money without your
hours). Pick the road on purpose.
- The 5 Fastlane Commandments — a business worth building scores high on all five:
- Need — it serves a real need (not your passion for its own sake).
- Entry — barriers to entry are high (easy-to-enter = saturated, low-margin).
- Control — you own and control it (not riding someone else's platform/rules).
- Scale — it can reach huge numbers of people.
- Time — it eventually runs without trading your time 1-for-1.
- The wealth equation: wealth = net profit + asset value. Both scale with magnitude × reach
(how much value × how many people) — not with hours worked.
What to use in your business
- Score your idea against Need/Entry/Control/Scale/Time. A business that fails Control
(you're at the mercy of one platform) or Scale (you can only serve a few) caps your ceiling —
know that going in.
- Stop trading hours for dollars as the end state. Build toward systems, products, or a
team that decouple income from your time.
- Avoid the no-barrier gold rush (whatever everyone's piling into) — high entry barriers are
a feature, they protect margin.
- Grow by magnitude × reach: serve more people, or deliver more value each — that's where
real numbers come from.
